Unifiedgateways’ EoC (Ethernet over Coax) Masters and CPE for access network are based on HomeplugAV/HomeplugAV2 technology. The Indoor/Outdoor Coax Line based equipment is based on Qualcomm Atheros AR64xx/AR74xx chipset used as a master device in the EOC system with Cable TV and IP data access function. It has an EOC module that mixes IP data and Cable TV signal to the Cable TV distribution network. It forms the top network element of a typical EOC network Tree topology. It can manage up to 253 EOC CPEs. It can be installed on the output lines of optical nodes in the HFC network or on the user distribution input lines to support the voice, video and other data services.

The Master device supports different management interfaces. Web, SNMP and Telnet are supported in for management. This device is able to manage all of the connected slaves with multiple configurations.

Examples include Quality of Service setting, security setting, performance statistics, status query and software upgrade. To reduce the interference between EOC and CATV, it takes over the frequency band less than 60MHZ which does not conflict with the existing CATV frequency band. Small/Medium/Large Service Providers globally are embracing WiFi as a standard means of Broadband delivery. Given the ease of Usage, Ubiquitous presence right from all Hand-held devices to high-end Television to a Media Player to a Signage player, License-Free Spectrum availability (with few exceptions), Neutral-host and on and on. While these being the advantages on access side what makes each WiFi vendor a unique player and what differentiates the other?

Coverage challenges

Hotspots across Enterprises/University/College campuses typically cover a wide geographical area (sometimes several sq.km); if not hundreds of buildings to be covered plus acres of outdoor areas where coverage would be desirable. Given the limited Wi-Fi Access Point (AP) coverage radius of 100m to 300m, many number of APs are required to extend coverage ubiquitously, which, depending on the vendor, can be an expensive affair. Also, each AP must be connected to the network backbone to provide complete coverage. Coverage with today’s MIMO technology and high-speed network backbones may seem to be an easy task, but with existing concrete structures it is tough to penetrate into the required coverage.

Capacity limitations

Coverage alone is not the key to a successful deployment. Sufficient capacity and roaming support are required for IT applications as well as converged communications. Since most installations have experienced the limitations of the legacy Wi-Fi they deployed a few years ago as wireless hotspots in libraries and student centers for example, it is not hard for them to imagine the significant difficulty of scaling the capacity of legacy wireless.

Roaming support between legacy APs is spotty at best, and seamless hand-offs to other subnets is non-existent. These factors add to the complexity and expense of additional equipment to try and resolve these issues.

Density requirements

Many environments are often required to support highly dense populations in a given location. A lecture hall or auditorium for example, can hold populations of 100, 500, or more individuals with devices that need network connectivity simultaneously. This is becoming more common as instructors increase their use of multimedia in classrooms and rely on the network for internet access, testing and evaluation, and other applications that require streaming of data, voice or video. The requirement to provide high density wireless is certainly orthogonal to the capability of legacy APs to service such environments. In addition, address space management and routing can be complex without the participation of some sort of regional intelligence.

Security concerns

For these factors aren’t enough to make wireless deployment problematic, the over arching fear for campus wide Wi-Fi deployment is security. More and more data propagated over the network carries some sort of sensitive or personal information that must be protected. Groups and services must also be isolated from one another to ensure quality of service as well as properly authorized access to resources.

Fiber as a backbone or last mile is playing a pivotal role in current broadband rollouts for ISPs/MSOs. Fiber in the last mile of the network can use any of the following underlying technologies:

FTTH:

GEPON technology is a Gigabit Ethernet over passive optical networks which are point to multipoint fiber to the premises (FTTP)/fiber to the home (FTTH) architecture in which single optical fiber is used to serve multiple premises or users. A typical ‘PON’ architecture consists of an Optical Line Termination (OLT) on the Service provider’s side and one or many Optical Network Unit/Terminal (ONU/ONT) on the Subscriber’s side. This type of architecture is always better than the point to point ones, and is capable of providing bandwidths of up to 1 gigabit and beyond.

GEPON provides for a symmetrical 1.0 Gbps data rate in both directions, upstream and downstream. GEPON’s biggest advantage is its use of native Ethernet protocols. GEPON provides seamless connectivity for any type of IP-based or other packetized (Ethernet) communications as it employs a Layer 2 network that uses IP to carry data, voice, and video.

When packets are transmitted from ONUs to OLTs, traffic collision can occur due to the simultaneous transmission by many ONUs. To avoid collisions, TDMA protocol, which divides time so as the signal not to be doubled, is used. TDMA protocol makes an OLT transmit packets to an ONU (ONT)/OLT with time interval which enables the time division of allotted bandwidth to avoid the collision of traffic signal.

Unifiedgateways’ GEPON solution not only consists of OLTs and ONU/ONTs, but also a varied versions of ONU/ONTs with EOC Master so that the network can be expanded not as Single-Branch-Tree architecture, but as a Multi-Branch-Twig level network. This kind of Reachability enables the service provider to expand to even the remotest place in his service area and enable a vast network expanse (sometimes even 5 times the normal Reachability).

Wavelength Division Multiplexing available in different forms like WDM, FWDM, CWDM or DWDM. The last mile (few miles to few tens of miles) always presents its own challenges. Efficient use of (F/C/D) WDM makes it easy to seamlessly integrate various services to be delivered to customers.

A mix of Fiber and Coax also can be used to achieve both Last-Mile and Last-Inch of the network too. This type of network is termed as HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax) networks.

Since the physical fiber optic cabling is expensive to implement for each and every service separately, its capacity expansion using a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a necessity. WDM is a concept that describes combination of several streams of data/storage/video or voice on the same physical fiber-optic cable by using several wavelengths (frequencies) of light with each frequency carrying a different type of data.

There are many types of WDM architecture: Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) are the dominant ones. CWDM systems typically provide 8 wavelengths, separated by 20nm, from 1470nm to 1610nm. In order to increase the number of wavelength, one can also use the 1310 nm window so the CWDM channels can be increased to 16. Some DWDM network systems provide up to 96 wavelengths, typically with no more than 0.4nm spacing, roughly over the C-band range of wavelengths.

Additionally, the typical CWDM spectrum supports data transport rates of up to 4.25Gbps, while DWDM is utilized more for large capacity data transport needs of up to 100Gbps. By mapping DWDM channels within the CWDM wavelength spectrum as demonstrated below, much higher data transport capacity on the same fiber optic cable can be achieved without any need for changing the existing fiber infrastructure between the network sites.
